Part 2….The Railway City…St. Thomas
After an enjoyable morning visiting Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese then a delicious lunch Pinecroft we ventured to St Thomas the Railway City of Ontario!
Next stop…. Elgin County Railway Museum. Step back to the glory days of rail travel through this interesting Museum housed in the Patterns Building and Michigan Central Railroad Repair Shop which dates back to 1913. Once you enter you can see the passion the volunteers have in restoring all details of the railway era from the Communications Room to a Diesel Train made completely with match sticks to refurbished hand cars, caboose, baggage cars, sleeper cars to 5700 Steam Engine! The staff and volunteers are happy to answer any questions and give the history of the trains and artifacts.
To enjoy more time outside wonder over to the St Thomas Elevated Park located on the Michigan Central Railway Bridge that once was recognized as an engineering marvel of its era! Located 109 feet above the Kettle Creek this bridge once at its peak carried 50 trains per day. Built in 1930 and now a park with art installations, benches and wonderful view. Park your car at the end of Centre Street for the entrance to the trail that will take you to the railway bridge. Great place for the selfie of the day!
The last stop of the day is to wet our whistle at Railway City Brewing Company for a flight of artisan beers. A must try is Dead Elephant brew, new on tap is Steampunk Sour made with Sour Cherries and my favorite Orange Creamsicle brew.
From good cheese and beer to delicious lunch under the trees to stepping back in time to the glory days of railroads this was a day to remember!
