Savour Guelph from its food scene to history!

It’s Saturday morning in downtown Guelph, the best spot to start today’s adventure is the Guelph Farmers Market!  Bustling with people looking for their favourite vendor.  Due to COVID 19 it is a outside market for the summer with plans to reorganize the Farmers’ Market building to allow for social distancing soon.  You can pick up fruits, greens, honey, herbs, baking, ciders and much more.  Make sure you pack a cooler bag to keep your produce fresh!

Our next stop was the Guelph Civic Museum located in the former Loretto Convent just steps away from Basilica Our Lady Immaculate.

The Guelph Civic Museum is an interesting look at Guelph from its history, to a time capsule of 1999 to the Lay of the Land (understanding the complex relationship to the land and Guelph).    The Museum is by donation to the end of August.

After learning the history of Guelph stroll down MacDonnell Street to the downtown area to discover a great restaurant for lunch!  There are many to choose from plus Saturdays they close some of the streets to extend patios!

After a delicious meal stroll back to Basilica Our Lady Immaculate to be awed by this lovely Basilica.  There is so much to take in from the lovely stained windows to the stone pillars to the wood and stone carvings.  This is wonderful place to sit, take in your surroundings and be at peace.  Outside of the Basilica are great views of the city as it sits at the highest point in the city.  Stroll through the Garden of Grace or in the Remembrance area which has a stature of Colonel John McCrae who wrote the poem “In Flanders Fields”.

After enjoying the Remembrance area, we decided to go to McCrae House, the birthplace of Colonel John McCrae, which is located just south of the Eramosa River in Guelph.   The stone cottage houses artifacts regarding the life of Colonel McCrae including the famous poem.  It also has lovely gardens surrounding the cottage.  Note: every spring this museum has a fundraiser selling poppies for you to plant in your own garden.

We finish the day with a stroll along the Eramosa River to the Boathouse which has a café and ice cream shop that you sit along the river.  The ice cream shop was calling our name and we were not disappointed.

Guelph is to be savoured from its Farmers’ Market to its history to its booming beer scene to its eateries! Enjoy!
